Ravenswood is a quaint mining town located in the Charters Towers Region of Queensland, Australia. Situated approximately 40 kilometres south of Mingela and around 89 kilometres from Charters Towers, this small locality had a population of 297 according to the 2021 census.
**History**
Ravenswood stands as a living testament to the historical gold rush era, once thriving with a bustling community that boasted over 48 hotels. Today, the town's population is estimated at around 255, with only two beautifully restored hotels remaining that capture the essence of its rich history. Following the discovery of gold in 1868, the township flourished well into the early 1900s, reaching a peak population of nearly 5000 residents. Many historic buildings from this period remain, showcasing the significant heritage.
However, various challenges, including an industrial strike in 1912 and the disruptions of World War I, led to a decline in mining activities, causing the town to dwindle. From 1879 to 1930, Ravenswood served as the administrative centre for local governance, first as the Ravenswood Division and later as the Shire of Ravenswood. Unfortunately, due to the population decline, the Shire was absorbed into the Shire of Dalrymple.
By the 2006 census, Ravenswood had seen its population drop to 191 inhabitants.
